driveway-manhole.jpgBrooklyn, Iowa planned for reconstruction of W. Des Moines Street from West Street to Jackson Street in 2021. Scheduled improvements included grading to improve drainage as well as replacement of the water main and services and sanitary sewer mains and services.

This stretch of W. Des Moines Street was a complete reconstruction of about 1,900 linear feet of PCC paving with integral curb and gutter.

There are 40 homes and 3 intersections (West St., Monroe St., and Park Ave.) along the project route. Maintaining access to these properties was one of the main challenges of the project. There were 32 driveways that were closed during construction and later replaced. All driveways were accessible unless actively involved in construction and the project was completed in 2 phases to minimize disruption.

MMS worked with the City to hold meetings with property owners to keep them informed about the construction process, related costs and responsibilities. We also coordinated pre-construction inspections of service types and connections and well as plumbed discharges from homes.

ADA at Monroe.jpgSeveral utility conflicts had to be worked through during construction and ADA-accessible sidewalks and curb ramps were constructed with regrading and varied elevations providing interesting challenges to the project.

Work started in July of 2021, continued through the winter and was completed in the early spring of 2022.
