Senior Civil Engineer

Senior Civil Engineer - Wastewater

Do you love your work but not your workplace? MMS Consultants, Inc. would like to talk. We're an established firm with a consistent workload, more than 40 years of success behind us and tens of thousand of projects under our belt.

We need someone who is a licensed Professional Engineer to serve as the point of client contact and project lead for a variety of land development projects. Applicants who are deeply familiar with current best water practices and/or transportation will have an advantage.

This is a leadership position and requires someone who is comfortable with networking to develop new business relationships, public speaking, and presentations. Your day will find you spending time designing, but also getting out to meet clients.

  • Design water supply, wastewater facilities and processes, municipal improvements, subdivisions and site plans.
  • Make design recommendations, adaptations and modifications.
  • Perform calculations for project design and permitting.
  • Prepare site investigation, analyses and technical reports.
  • Review and summarize local, state and federal regulations.
  • Prepare accurate contract documents for publicly bid projects, including but not limited to plan drawings, design computations, cost estimates and technical specifications.
  • Prepare accurate permit application packages.
  • Work with our Engineering Techs to complete design work using AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Work closely with other professionals on multidisciplinary projects.

Project management:

  • Develop fees and work with our Marketing staff to write proposals, prep and deliver presentations, and negotiate and review contracts.
  • Manage and appropriately prioritize multiple projects and tasks.
  • Monitor financial status of projects and tasks.
  • Responsible for project schedules and completion of projects on deadline.
  • Effectively communicate information to staff, clients and leadership team.
  • Prepare reports and correspondence concerning the direction of assigned projects.
  • Attend meetings, sometimes outside regular work hours, with city councils, P&Z boards and clients.

Business development:

  • Enhance the firm’s reputation with clients, the public and the profession:
  • Help build the professional practice of the firm. Develop and expand sales and new clients.
  • Represent the company and engineering department in client meetings, project meetings and presentations in a professional and confident manner.
  • Effectively communicate with staff, clients, contractors and regulatory bodies.
  • Develop a network of clients, partners and influencers within engineering communities.
  • Participate in related professional societies, conferences and local organizations in support of business development and networking.


The qualified candidate is a Professional Engineer in the State of Iowa or able to become licensed in Iowa. Five to seven years’ experience is required. A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering is required; an emphasis on hydrology or environmental engineering not required but preferred. Knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D is preferred.

Survey Crew Chief

We need a Survey Crew Chief to join our survey team. There's a lot of work out there and, with MMS, you get to do it close to home. We have one of the most experienced, longest serving survey teams in Eastern Iowa, with a list of over 40,000 projects completed and about 10,000 clients served. Even more, we still have our first clients, and a few of our earliest surveyors on board! Why? Plenty of work, with opportunity for overtime but flexible scheduling because we all have lives, too.


  • Lead other surveyors on projects that require teams
  • Take ownership of assigned projects, communicating with engineers and assistants to maintain schedules and overall organization.
  • Faithfully record data and project info to facilitate project completion and accountability.
  • Have a good time whenever appropriate - and possible.

This position works out of our Iowa City office


  • The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, organized and excels at multitasking and meeting deadlines.
  • Qualified candidates must have at least three years’ experience and be familiar with AutoCAD Civil 3D terminology.
  • Familiarity with Trimble equipment and drone/aerial surveying is a plus
  • A Professional Surveyors License in the State of Iowa is preferred.

Surveyor/ Survey Coordinator

We're looking for candidates who are surveyors or who have surveying experience with working knowledge of Engineering Tech to oversee and coordinate one of the largest surveying departments in Eastern Iowa. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment, works independently, has sound decision-making and communication skills. The successful candidate will possess a strong technical understanding of all kinds of surveys and an ability to communicate effectively with our Engineering Tech staff.

This position is in our Iowa City office.


  • Manage and direct schedules for a Survey Department that includes 6 Survey Chiefs and 4 licensed surveyors.
  • Multitask on several projects at one time, applying appropriate effort to each.
  • Communicate with managers, peers, and clients as needed to maintain workflow.
  • Prepare site investigation, analyses and technical reports.


The successful candidate will have working knowledge of surveying methods and equipment. Hands on survey experience is a plus, as is familiarity with AutoCAD 3D systems. A civil engineering background or education is preferred.

Project Manager Assistant

Do you know enough about construction to help project managers get things done? Well, if you can maintain a professional demeanor, pay strong attention to details, can work independently under deadline pressure and handle confidential matters with discretion, this job is for you.


  • Assist with project management and coordination. Assist project managers in developing and maintaining project documentation. Track paperwork and submissions for projects. Monitor deadlines, submittals and exchanges of information. Gather and expedite information from project managers and other stakeholders. Regularly update project managers on status of projects.
  • Work directly with clients and sub-consultants when project manager is not available. Expedite deliverables and information to/from clients and sub-consultants. Build and maintain relationships crucial to the company.
  • Handle matters expeditiously and proactively.Anticipate needs and issues, and solve them before they become problems.Follow-through on projects to successful completion.
  • Prepare business and engineering documents on behalf of project managers, as requested. These include but are not limited to: letters, reports, transmittals, faxes, memos, contracts, specifications, forms, state and municipal permits and applications, etc.
  • Communicate and coordinate meeting times with area utility companies, to obtain required signatures on drawings.
  • Assist in general administrative tasks, such as answering phones, faxing, copying, filing, mailing, making company related deliveries, etc.
  • Other tasks as assigned.


  • One year certificate from college or technical school; and six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong organizational skills that reflect ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks seamlessly with great attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated proactive approaches to problem-solving.
  • Proven ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Demonstrate highest level of customer/client service.
  • Professional presentation and interpersonal skills over the phone and in person.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism while dealing with sensitive issues and stressful deadlines.
  • Ability to use tact, discretion, initiative and sound, independent judgment in establishing and maintaining cooperative and productive working relationships with clients and peers.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills.
  • Advanced skills with Microsoft Office and Adobe applications.
